If anybody knows Assam in India, it’s all because of Rhinos residing at Kaziranga National Park and other neighboring sanctuaries. The land of unending tea estates, Bihu- the cultural folk dance and silk sarees, Assam is a state that reflects the true east-Indian charisma along with its natural beauty localizing everywhere specifically at its great sanctuaries. Being fertile and flourished with the mighty Brahmaputra, the river; that also sometimes causes massive destruction during monsoons, the sanctuaries like Kaziranga, Manas, Nameri and Rajiv Gandhi National Park prove to be the true producer of re-generation and resettling of life. All credit goes to the locals and the forest officials of the area that the rehabilitation efforts bring effective colors to the area keeping in the mind about the natural conservation.

Every year, the state witness massive downpours all around the region, bringing great natural and economical losses; but cheers to the high-spirited lives of the Assamese (including the innocent rhinos) that they re-establish their normal life back. One such incidence of Manas National Park has really opened everyone’s mouth in surprise and pleasure; when a three month old calf called Ganga was being rescued during the annual floods in Kaziranga in 14^th July, 2004 by the forest department. She was severely injured, dehydrated and traumatized and lost her mother too. But the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation’s (CWRC) veterinarian took active actions in rescuing her and bringing her the best possible treatments by shifting her to CWRC near Kaziranga for hand-raising and rehabilitation. While she was admitted, she had severe respiratory problems and muscular fatigue and was kept under intensive care at the CWRC and was successfully treated.

More impressively, Ganga was also being accompanied by Yamuna, another victim of the flood drenched area where both the calves were brought up together and spent around 2 and half years in the center.

Successfully, on 28^th Jan 2007 both Ganga and Yamuna were then relocated to Manas National Park, the park which is being recognized under Project Tiger, for the next phase of rehabilitation called the ‘soft release’. And for the very first time in the history of Indian wildlife, Ganga gave birth to a little female calf in the wild. The little calf was being christened Dharti that means the earth- to bring tribute to the ecosystem.

The birth of Dharti marked a great milestone in the Rhino Rehabilitation Project, a joint venture of the Assam Forest Department and International Fund for Animal Welfare – Wildlife Trust of India (IFAW-WTI). The organizations are raising funds for the orphaned or displaced calves to rehabilitate them in the wild. The birth has brought great enthralling win over situation for the organization, locals and for the entire nation, after the poor incidences of poaching of rhinos at greater scales for their horns. This is incredibly a great achievement amidst such a bleak situation to bring the concept of ecological conservation in a true evident form.

Ganga was among the first rhinos to be shifted to Manas after recovering from the traumatized situation. Ganga, and now Dharti, both being a part of the rhino reintroduction program in Manas National Park, kick started in 2006, brought the move of the first hand-raised calf from CWRC.

Manas National Park once lost all its rhinos till the year 1990s, bringing the area reeling under severe civil conflict. Unfortunately, this world heritage site was declared in danger.  Afterwards, many initiatives were implemented to restore the natural position including the Rhino reintroduction in the early 2000s. And pleasingly, the tag of ‘in danger’ was then lifted by UNESCO in the year 2011. It was Ganga, the rhino, who was first introduced to Manas National Park under the reintroduction program and then the birth of Dharti really made a blissful and rewarding achievement for the nation.

The credit of such efforts all goes to the frontline staff (who saved it from drowning), the entire team of the veterinarians, animal keepers and the biologists, for successfully treating her, regaling her and then finally releasing her to the Manas National Park.

By facing such great difficulties and obstructions, the attempts of wildlife conservation is truly appreciating and we hope such more ever-remembering and rewarding efforts will be continued in future by joining hands together by the forest officials, the local functionaries, the common people and the entire nation by introducing and preserving more and more species to bring back the nature in its original form.

Ranthambore National Park is the name that has been in the public eye since 1991 when it was being enlarged by including Sawai Man Singh and Keladevi Sanctuary; and was considered as the most popularized reserve under the Tiger Project in Sawai Madhopur area in Rajasthan. The area which was once only allowed for the Maharajas of Jaipur bringing them to the hunting grounds to play with their chivalry acts and hunting braveries is today the charm of many wildlife experts and photographers.

Interestingly, Ranthambore has a special figure on the mind of many wildlife enthusiasts and the main reason behind its supreme fame is the presence of most popular tigers. The tigers of Ranthambore that show most unusual behavior and human like acts attract tremendous tiger lovers all around the vicinity in a thirst to catch their enigmatic movements and behaviors.

Usually the most achieving part of Ranthambore is that their favorite residents are quite known by their names only. Out of which some of them are so popular that they are being nick-named as Machali, Sitara, Dollar, Sundari and so on depending upon their notable marks and strip patterns on their bodies.

In Ranthambore, every tiger has its own unique story and thanks to the great efforts of naturalists and Ranthambore officials & guides that we too came to know about India’s greatest assets in the form of Ranthambore tigers in a quite interesting manner.

Since many years, the jungle officials and the wildlife experts are experimenting on them and have gone through tremendous trials as per their behaviors are concerned. The magnanimous chivalry acts of Machali to win her territory and winning over the giant crocodile is a legend in the history of Ranthambore. Similarly, Dollar, the T-25 tiger has been famed as the dominant tiger of his territory (in the Kachida region) and as a proud father who adopted his two female cubs (Bina1 & Bina2 who are now the crowns of Sariska) as a sincere father and brought their upbringing; unusual to the behavior of a male tiger in general, who kills his own cub out of hunger. Like Dollar and Machali, the T-16 tigress, who is being nominated as the queen of the Ranthambore there are many such celebrity tigers that bring the wildlife lovers the enthusiastic approach towards Sawai Madhopur.

And now, adding more spices to this curry, yet another experiment has amazed the world of wildlife when with several trials a wining situation has gripped the interest in Ranthambore tigers to greater extent and that too about their sex ratio. It is being a generally accepted fact that that the best male to female ratio for tigers is 1:3, but in Ranthambore, quite amazed to find the fact that the ratio is 1:1.

To make it more clear, male tigers in a particular territory can be found mating with three female tigers but as we stated earlier, Ranthambore tigers are quite exceptional and like humans (quite amazing but true) can be found mating with only one female tiger from the past many years. Not only are these tigers breeding well, except for some lull periods but the fights for the territory are also minimal in many cases and have not found any jeopardized situation in the territory. And perhaps this could be the cause for the increase in their counts in Ranthambore where at present 25 male tigers and 22 female tigers are ruling. Amongst them there are 12 full grown males and 14 adult females, the rest being cubs playing in their laps. Interestingly, each male tiger has a female to it except for tiger T-33 which has a “lion’s share” of two tigresses.” In such a fresh scenario today, the famous Machali is the only tigress that lives alone and is not so attached to any male since she is growing old.

With the reduced number of females in Ranthambore, the probability of territorial fights could have increased but most unnaturally it is a very rare case when males have fought amongst themselves in Ranthambore except for the report of T-36 being killed by T-42 recently.

In fact, each male will be found remain confined to its territory and on the contrary many tigresses would be found engaged in territorial fights that also proved to be fatal like that for T-4, T-15 and T-5.

Besides, there are some of the tigers which are showing some kind of emotional reactions to each other where in one case we have found T-25, the Dollar (male tiger) is being left alienated and lonely by T-19 female, who left the territory without saying goodbye and re-united to her old companion T-28. And out of rage like a ditched guy, Dollar caught hold of the old lady Machali and was found checking her out as if he is enquiring her, what’s wrong with both her sisters T-17 & T-19 (both used to live with Dollar once).

Unlike to their nature, the forest officials might be focusing on the issue of this 1:1 ratio but since these big cats are not minding anymore and the trial is running so smoothly, it would better to consider it as the one of its own kind of Ranthambore where definitely tigers rule in their own unique way.

Oraon Tribe

Much progressive tribe in India, the Oraons are much into education and worship in churches. The community, divided into sub-castes like Kudas and Kisans; follow patrilineal family customs. Over the years, the community has progressed a lot and has shifted to the major cities of India and also settled in abroad. Earlier dependent on forest and farms for rituals and livelihood the community has now being settled into agriculture and education.

Bhil Tribe

Lastly, the most popular tribe in India, located at the central India the Bhils are the most popular tribe commonly found in the areas of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and far-east in Tripura. The community has greater association with the braveries of ancient times since they (Bhils) were the brave warriors in Maharana Pratap & Chhatrapati Shivaji’s Army.

Gaddi Tribe

Mostly the inhabitants of the Dauladher Range of Himachal Pradesh, the people of this tribal community are Gypsies in true nature and keep shifting their base to a higher level during summers. The Gaddi tribe has accepted and believes in both the Islam and Hindu religions and carries the main occupation of sheep rearing and wool making. Some of the Gaddis dwell in Brahamaur Region of Chamba District, near the higher regions of Ravi River and valleys of Budhil River.

The Bodo Tribe

The largest ethnic & linguistic tribal community of north-western parts of Assam is the Bodo tribe and Kachari. Residing in the Brahmaputra valley the Bodos are best recognized as earliest settlers in Assam. Being derived from the word ‘Bod’ means Tibet, Bodos are a peace-loving people with their main occupation as agriculture and sericulture; the Bodos follow the culture known as Bathouism and are best known for their exceptionally colorful folk dances such as Bardaichikhla and Bagurumba.

Munda Tribe

Mainly inhabits the region of Jharkhand, the Munda tribe is also spread in some regions of Bihar, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and Orissa. This tribal community is highly respectable from the time of pre-Independence era because of the active participation in the freedom struggle. Birsa Munda, the most respected freedom fighter and fought very hard at the age of 20 and was treated as God by the tribal community.

Gond Tribe

The basic inhabitant of Indian Deccan peninsula, the Gond community can be found in the central part of India where the region is called the Gondwana region and so do the tribe is being named. The regions of the Gonda in India are specifically in Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh, Bastar district of Chattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Orissa. The cultures of the Gonds have been inherited from Dravidian culture and are the followers of Hindu religion.

Khasi Tribe

The Khasi tribes are the inhabitants of the Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya and interestingly around 50 % of the Meghalayan population is composed of the Khasi Tribe but beside that, some parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Manipur, West Bengal and J&K are also the true inhabitants for the Khasi community. Khasis belong to the Matrilineal Society i.e. the descendents are recognized by the mother and maternal ancestors.

Chenchu Tribe

The Chenchu tribes in Andhra Pradesh are the Hindu Aboriginal tribes inhabiting at the Nallamalla hills. They are the food gathering people living in the Nallmalla forests with their main activity as hunting and gathering food. The interesting fact about the Chenchus are that they are one of the Primitive Tribal Groups that are still dependent on forests and do not cultivate land but hunt for a living.

Dimasa Tribe

Found in the North Eastern India at the regions of Jatinga valley, the Dimasa tribe is the part of the great Bodo-Kachari group in the present day Dima Hasao district of Assam. The tribe is best known for their cultural and traditional cinevistaas. Their folk dance dorms are very exceptional since they do not follow any songs but their dance forms are entirely dependent on the instrumental music.

Hawa Mahal: It is one of the most recognized monuments of Jaipur that features a 5-storied eye-catching semi-octagonal architecture. It features 953 windows with over hanging latticed balconies called Jharokhas. Initially, this monument was built for the royal ladies with a purpose to watch the processions and other activities of the street. At present, it features a museum displaying past and present of Jaipur.

Jantar Mantar: Constructed in 18th century by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, Jantar Mantar is a beautiful compilation of architectural astronomical instruments. Built with local stone and marble, each appliance of this monument has an astronomical scale that is used to measure different astronomical phenomenon. The tourist spot was methodically restored in 1901 and was declared as a national monument in 1948.
